Gaming Controller Gifts for Console and PC Players

Choose their platform first

A second controller can turn a solo session into a shared one, or replace the gamepad they have been nursing through one more match. The thoughtful part is getting the exact platform right: a controller for a PC, PlayStation or Nintendo console is not automatically interchangeable.

Why people love it

Why it makes such a good gift

A controller is a pleasingly personal part of a gaming setup: players notice the button layout, stick position and feel long before they admire the colour. An extra one can be a welcome invitation to join in, but only if the game and machine support the way they want to play.

Start with the name on the console

The Xbox Wireless Controller is our starting point for an Xbox or compatible Windows-PC player who wants the familiar Xbox layout. This Pulse Red version works with Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One as well as supported computers and other devices. The colour is a choice of finish, not a different platform; compare the available colours and their own prices before ordering. It is not a controller for PS5 or Nintendo Switch.

For PlayStation 5, the Midnight Black DualSense supplies the expected PS5 controls, with game-dependent haptic feedback and adaptive triggers—the vibration and changing trigger resistance that some games use. It can also be used with supported PC games, but connection and special-feature support vary by title. Do not treat buying one for a PC as a guarantee of every PS5-style effect.

Nintendo needs a generation check. The Switch 2 Pro Controller is for Nintendo Switch 2 only, with remappable rear buttons and a headset socket. The original Switch Pro Controller offers the original Switch-family layout and features; it is a different model, not the same controller in an older box. Ask which console they own before choosing. Switch 2 owners should also check Nintendo’s current compatibility guidance if considering an older controller.

The GameSir Nova Lite 2 is the PC-focused alternative here, with a wireless receiver, Bluetooth and wired connection routes plus two programmable rear buttons. Its listed platforms also include original Switch, Android and iOS, with different connection modes. It is not an Xbox-console or PS5 replacement. Check the particular device, connection and game’s controller support rather than assuming a list of platforms means every feature works everywhere.

Will it be ready to use?

  • The Xbox controller uses AA batteries or a suitable rechargeable battery pack. A USB cable does not turn ordinary AA batteries into a rechargeable pack; budget for the power arrangement they prefer.
  • DualSense has a rechargeable battery and needs suitable USB charging equipment. Confirm the cable in the exact offer rather than assuming a loose-controller box contains the console’s cable.
  • The Switch 2 Pro Controller includes a USB charging cable. Its GameChat and other online features have separate account, internet and membership requirements; parental approval applies to children using GameChat.
  • For wireless PC play, check Bluetooth or the appropriate receiver. For local multiplayer, the game must support another player and controller.

A known favourite model makes a safer surprise than an unfamiliar “pro” design chosen for its name. Ask before changing their stick layout or buying a specialist controller for a player with accessibility needs. If they mostly want clearer game sound and chat, a gaming headset is a different upgrade; a PS5 game can suit someone whose controller is already just right, provided the format, age rating and library match.
