Delivery, entertainment and everyday value

Is Amazon Prime worth it?

Prime is easiest to justify when you use more than one of its benefits. Faster delivery may bring you in, but films, music, books and photo storage can make the membership useful after the gift shopping is finished.

Advertising disclosure: We earn a commission when you join or buy through retailer links, at no extra cost to you. How our links work.

For eligible customers. A trial renews as a paid membership unless cancelled; check Amazon’s terms before joining.

For the regular shopper

Convenient delivery on eligible orders — with the date for your address checked before you buy.

For evenings and downtime

Included video, music and reading can add value when their selection suits your tastes.

For the occasional order

Free standard delivery or grouping purchases may make another subscription unnecessary.

The quick answer: count the benefits you will actually use

If you regularly order eligible items from Amazon and would also watch Prime Video or use another included service, Prime is worth considering. If you make a couple of orders a year, already have entertainment subscriptions you prefer, or rarely need fast delivery, paying for another membership may add little.

Start with your own habits, rather than the length of the benefits list. Would you use these services anyway? A benefit has little value if joining creates spending you would otherwise avoid.

What does Prime cost in the UK?

Amazon’s standard UK Prime membership is £8.99 a month or £95 a year, as of 30 September 2026. The annual plan costs less than twelve monthly payments, but commits more money upfront. Monthly membership is more flexible if your need is concentrated around Christmas or another busy shopping period.

Eligible customers can try Prime for 30 days. Amazon also has a discounted Prime for Young Adults offer for eligible 18–24-year-olds and students; check its verification requirements and the offer shown to you. Membership renews automatically, so note the renewal date and manage or cancel it through your Amazon account if you do not want to continue.

What you get — and what is separate

Delivery

fast delivery on eligible items, including One-Day and some Same-Day options. Your address, the item, order value and the delivery option affect what is available. The promised date at checkout matters more than a general Prime badge.

Prime Video

a selection of films and series included with membership. Included viewing contains advertising; an ad-free upgrade costs extra. Rentals, purchases and add-on channels are separate, so check the label before pressing play.

Amazon Music Prime

included music listening, with playback restrictions. It is different from the separately paid Music Unlimited subscription, which offers more listening control and features.

Prime Reading

a changing selection of ebooks and other reading included with Prime. Kindle Unlimited is a separate subscription with a different catalogue; neither means every Kindle book is free.

Amazon Photos

unlimited full-resolution photo storage for Prime members, with a separate allowance for videos and other files. Useful if you want a home for family pictures, but it is not unlimited video storage.

Prime also gives access to member offers and shopping events. Amazon Family lets eligible household members share selected benefits under its rules; it is not an unrestricted membership to distribute to friends. Check the current sharing and payment arrangements before adding anyone.

Which kind of member are you?

The regular gift shopper: several eligible orders across birthdays and Christmas make delivery convenient. Compare the membership cost with the delivery charges you would actually pay — some orders already qualify for free standard delivery without Prime.

The occasional shopper who enjoys the entertainment: Prime Video or the included reading and music may be the main reason to stay. Look at the titles and listening options you want first, rather than treating them as replacements for every other subscription.

The last-minute buyer: Prime may widen your delivery choices, but it cannot make an unavailable item arrive on time. Check stock, seller, address and the displayed delivery date before deciding.

When we would skip it

There is little reason to pay for Prime if you are happy to group occasional orders and wait for standard delivery, or if the included entertainment does not interest you. An existing household arrangement may already cover the benefits you need. Check that before opening another subscription.

A trial is useful for testing the service, provided you understand the renewal. It should not become a reason to buy more presents than you planned. Set your gift budget first, then decide whether membership makes those purchases easier.

Planning Christmas shopping?

The timing matters: a 30-day trial started in September will not cover December. Our Christmas Prime shopping guide explains how to judge delivery choices, spread your orders and plan around the dates you need.

If the present itself should be a membership, explore Audible gifts and membership for a giftable audiobook option. A personal Prime trial should not be presented as a gift for someone else.
