Record Player Gifts for Music Lovers

There’s a lovely small ritual to putting on a record: choosing the album, lifting the lid and giving the music a little room in the day. A record player can start that habit, or bring it back for someone whose old albums have spent years doing very little in a cupboard. The gift works best when you match the whole listening setup, rather than buying a good-looking box and hoping the rest will sort itself out.

Will they hear music straight out of the box?

The Udreamer comes with a pair of separate speakers, so it is our starting point for a casual first vinyl setup. It’s a complete, recognisable gift without assuming the recipient already owns a hi-fi system. The linked example is brown; other finishes can have different prices and availability. It also receives music from a phone by Bluetooth, but that isn’t the same as sending a record’s sound to wireless headphones.

The Philips TAV3000B/10 takes a different approach: its speakers sit inside the record player itself. That suits someone who wants one unit on a shelf rather than a player and two speaker boxes. It has a headphone connection, too. Choose between those arrangements around their space and listening habits; an extra box isn’t automatically a better present.

The two Audio-Technica turntables don’t include listening speakers. They need compatible powered speakers, an amplifier and speakers, or a suitable Bluetooth listening device. Powered speakers have their own amplifier; ordinary passive speakers can’t simply be plugged in and expected to play. Leave room in the gift budget for any equipment they’re missing.

Automatic convenience or a hands-on hobby?

The AT-LP60XBT is the simpler separate-turntable route. Its automatic start and return reduce the handling involved, and it plays the 33⅓ and 45 rpm records most people will be buying. Check the speeds against their collection, especially if they own older records.

The AT-LP120XBT-USB is for someone who actually wants the setup and adjustment side of vinyl. You balance its tonearm and set the tracking force—the pressure with which the needle follows the groove—following the manual. It also offers a computer connection for recording vinyl. That’s useful for a willing hobbyist, but a complicated introduction for someone who just wants to put an album on after dinner.

Make the connections make sense

• Bluetooth direction: receiving phone music and sending vinyl sound are different features. The Udreamer receives; the Audio-Technica models can send to compatible listening devices. The Philips offers both directions, but your chosen headphones or speaker still need to work with its connection.
• A wired system: a phono pre-amplifier raises the small signal from a turntable to a level an ordinary audio input can use. The Audio-Technica models have a switchable one built in; use the setting appropriate to the recipient’s system.
• Older records: a 78 rpm speed setting alone doesn’t make every old shellac record suitable for the supplied needle. Ask about the records and check the required stylus before promising that an inherited collection will all play.

Give the records somewhere good to live

A level, steady surface and enough space to open the lid matter more than a photogenic corner. Keep the player away from bumps and vibration, especially from separate speakers. Help a beginner handle records by the edges, put them back in their sleeves and learn the maker’s cleaning routine. A cleaning brush can be a thoughtful extra; a pile of unverified accessories rarely improves the gift.

For a first player, an album they know and love gives them somewhere to begin. For a collector, ask what they already own and what they wish worked better. The most satisfying choice is the one that fits into their listening life, whether that’s a simple evening album or a hobby with its own carefully arranged shelf.
