E-Reader Gifts for Book Lovers and Travellers

More stories, less luggage

For a reader whose holiday packing starts with a difficult argument about books, an e-reader is a lovely way to make room for another story. Choose around where they already buy or borrow books, then consider screen size, colour and lighting. A compact black-and-white Kindle can be a better match for novels than a more elaborate colour device.

Why people love it

Why it makes such a good gift

Start with their books, rather than the newest device

Ask what they use now. A reader with a well-used Kindle library may prefer to stay with Kindle; a Kobo reader may want the same familiar shop and borrowing options. Moving between the two is not simply a matter of signing in to the other shop. Check their important titles and subscription before buying a different system.

The compact 2024 Kindle is a good starting point for straightforward novel reading. Its six-inch black-and-white screen and adjustable front light keep the gift focused on books. The linked Black 16GB version has lock-screen adverts. If the recipient wants a larger screen, an adjustable warm light or waterproof protection, the seven-inch 2024 Paperwhite is a meaningful step sideways in comfort and features. The featured Paperwhite is the version without adverts; the basic Kindle is not waterproof.

When colour earns its place

Colour is useful for covers, highlights and illustrated material. It is less decisive for someone who mainly reads plain-text novels, and a small e-reader screen may still be a poor fit for large-format comics, textbooks or diagrams. Do not assume that a colour model is a general tablet or that every e-reader supports a stylus.

Kobo Clara Colour is a compact six-inch, 16GB alternative with waterproof protection and adjustable lighting. It offers colour reading in Kobo’s ecosystem, rather than handwritten note-taking. The earlier Black 16GB Kindle Colorsoft gives a seven-inch colour screen within Kindle’s ecosystem, with warm light and waterproof protection.

The Graphite 2026 Colorsoft is a pre-order. Its listing gives 11 November 2026 as the release date. It has a thinner, lighter design, a seven-inch colour screen and no adverts, but release is not the same as a guaranteed arrival date. Check delivery against the occasion. The optional Kindle Click page-turn remote and covers are separate purchases. Choose the current Black Colorsoft if that is the better match for timing and the recipient’s needs.

UK library borrowing needs a specific check

Kobo supports borrowing through participating OverDrive libraries, with availability depending on the library and title. Check the recipient’s actual UK library service before promising free books: BorrowBox and other services are not the same as built-in OverDrive. Libby’s Send to Kindle service is for US libraries, so a UK Kindle gift should not be sold on that assumption.

Finish the gift around their reading routine

  • Buy a case for the exact model and generation; a seven-inch screen does not make all cases interchangeable.
  • Leave account registration to the recipient, or agree setup with them. For a teenager, involve a parent in purchases and account settings.
  • Books and subscriptions are separate from the hardware. Kindle Unlimited is optional and has its own catalogue, rather than including every book in the Kindle shop.
  • Check the charging cable and suitable power supply in the chosen pack. A screen with a built-in front light does not need a separate clip-on reading lamp.

A physical book can still be the warmer choice when you know exactly what they want to read. Explore book lover gifts for reading accessories and paper-based alternatives. The useful question is how this person likes to read, rather than how much technology will fit under the wrapping.
