Kids Audio Players for Stories, Songs and Journeys
Their stories, their choice
There is something lovely about a child choosing the next story without handing an adult a phone. These audio players use physical cards or characters to start listening, giving small hands a satisfying job to do. Yoto Mini travels light; Toniebox Lite and Toniebox 2 put familiar figures at the centre. Choose the system around the child’s age and stories, as well as the box.

Why people love it
Why it makes such a good gift
The best starting point is often the stories the child already loves. Yoto uses cards; tonies uses figures placed on top of the player. Those collections are separate systems, so a thoughtful extra from the wrong range will not play. If the family already owns either, adding within that system can make more sense than introducing another app and shelf of accessories.
What will they be able to hear on day one?
The fourth-generation Yoto Mini includes a Welcome/Make Your Own card, a USB-C cable and access to free audio, including Journey Jams. A particular audiobook card is a separate choice. Its headphone options and portable size make it the lead here for children aged 3+ who listen on journeys as well as at home. Use the supplied cable and arrange a suitable USB-C power supply.
Toniebox Lite My Story Set includes Creative-Tonie Rubie, which a grown-up can fill with personal recordings or suitable uploaded audio. That can turn a grandparent’s bedtime story into part of the present, but it takes preparation; it is not the same as receiving a named character’s ready-made audiobook. The Lite is marked for ages 1–12+, plays Tonies and does not support Tonieplay. Its certified USB-C cable and power supply are sold separately.
For a child who would love a familiar story immediately, the featured Sky Blue UK Toniebox 2 starter includes a Bluey Tonie with seven English-language adventures, marked 3+, and charging equipment. Toniebox 2 also supports Tonieplay, the range’s interactive audio games, with games and a controller bought separately. Buying the player does not include every game in the range.
A little grown-up preparation goes a long way
- Set up the family account, app and Wi-Fi before wrapping it, if the parents are happy for you to do so. Leave ownership with the household that will use it.
- Download chosen audio before a journey. Yoto cards need Wi-Fi on their first play; downloaded content can then travel with the player. Live radio and other online functions still need a connection.
- Check the age of both the player and each card or Tonie. A player’s starting age does not make every story or small accessory suitable for every child.
- For the fourth-generation Yoto Mini, check interactive-card support before buying an interactive extra: not all interactive features are available yet.
Budget for the collection, not just the player
One favourite story can be replayed a remarkable number of times. Further cards and figures are optional purchases, but they can become the continuing cost of the gift; compare the stories the family would actually buy. A subscription is another separate decision, rather than an automatic requirement for owning the hardware.
Ask where it will be used. A player with headphones may suit shared journeys, whereas a bedroom listener might value familiar controls and bedtime routines. Follow the manufacturer’s volume and charging advice, particularly for younger children. Tonies contain magnets, so check the product’s medical-device warnings where relevant.
