LEGO Pokémon SMART Play Gifts: First Sets and Expansions
Build the world, then play it back
Pikachu has more to say after the building is finished. LEGO Pokémon SMART Play uses electronic SMART Bricks and tagged pieces to add responsive sounds, lights and interactions as children move their models. For a first gift, choose an All-in-One set with the working brick included; the smaller Compatible sets need that hardware to unlock their interactive features.

If the first pick is not quite right, these alternatives keep the same overall feel.
A larger All-in-One battle set for ages 8+, with 751 pieces, two SMART Bricks, four SMART Tags and a charger. Charizard and Jolteon each have a responsive brick, making this the more involved two-Pokémon route.

A 198-piece Compatible set for ages 6+, with Charmander, Geodude and two SMART Tags. It can be built and played with on its own, but interactive sounds and lights require a SMART Brick from a separate All-in-One set.

Why people love it
Why it makes such a good gift
The most important words on the box
All-in-One and Compatible are different purchases. The Training House with Pikachu 72164 includes one SMART Brick, a charger and four SMART Tags. It is the lead for a first gift: a 400-piece build marked 6+, with the core interactive hardware in the pack. Charizard vs. Jolteon Ultimate Battle 72167 is the larger 751-piece, 8+ route, with two SMART Bricks, four tags and a charger for the two-Pokémon action.
Charmander and Geodude’s Cavern Clash 72157 is a 198-piece, 6+ Compatible set. It is a complete construction toy in its own right, with movable figures and physical play features, but it contains no SMART Brick. Its two tags only trigger interactive sounds and lights when used with a brick from an All-in-One set. LEGO does not sell the SMART Brick as a standalone item, so an apparently modest expansion can become a much bigger purchase if the recipient has no compatible hardware.
Match the building and the play
A younger Pokémon fan may prefer caring for and training Pikachu to assembling a larger battle scene. A confident builder might enjoy the extra construction and two responsive characters in Charizard vs. Jolteon. Start with the marked age, then consider patience, experience and whether the child likes taking a model straight into imaginative play. Loving Pokémon cards does not automatically mean wanting a long building session.
The electronic part responds to movement and tagged objects rather than requiring a game on a screen during play. All-in-One sets include a SMART Charger and USB-C charging cable. Follow the charging instructions and have a suitable power source ready; the first excited session is a poor time to start searching every kitchen drawer.
Check the bricks they already own
- New Pokémon All-in-One sets contain the hardware needed for their own interactive play. An already-owned SMART Brick may need a firmware update through the LEGO SMART Assist app before using newer sets.
- The app also handles settings and troubleshooting. Arrange grown-up help for updates rather than promising that an older brick will work with every new feature immediately.
- SMART Play is a particular interactive system. Ordinary LEGO bricks can be part of a build, but they do not become electronic simply by being nearby.
Character preference earns a place alongside the practical checks. Quietly finding out whether they love Pikachu, Charizard or another Pokémon is more useful than assuming the largest box wins. If their favourite part is creating something to keep on a shelf, the broader LEGO set for adults route offers a different kind of building gift; check each set’s age guidance rather than treating the two ranges as interchangeable.
